Coal Stacker Reclaimer Delivery for Westshore Terminal
Introduction:
Westshore Terminal at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, is North America’s largest and most advanced coal terminal.
Recently, in order to increase their capacity, the Terminal was upgrading their facilities, which included a new coal stacker reclaimer.
This vital piece of machinery was designed to facilitate their growing efficiency and operating flexibility by increasing the amount of coal they could load and unload simultaneously.
When the time came for the delivery and installation of the new coal stacker reclaimer, Westshore called Apex for help.
The Challenge:
The components of the coal stacker reclaimer were extremely heavy and awkward. The entire unit was built by a local steel fabricator in five large pieces, each weighing from 100 to 775 tons.
The first stage of delivery required water transport, which meant that all of the pieces needed to be secured to a barge. Once at the site, the biggest challenge was maneuvering the equipment and performing the installation within the limited space of the terminal’s existing footprint.
The Solution:
Westshore trusted Apex with this highly specialized installation. We dispatched a crew of twenty professionals to carefully plan the move and arrange for the waterway transportation. We used our specialized jack and slide system, prime mover, winch tractor, dollies, and barge to complete the task.
On Vancouver Island, where the stacker reclaimer was manufactured, the components were transported to a barge landing, and then loaded onto a barge, where they were carefully secured for transport to Vancouver.
Once on site at Roberts Bank, the barge was unloaded, and the pieces were set in position on rails. With the size, weight, and dimensions of the components, it was absolutely critical that the move was performed precisely and according to strict guidelines. Finally, our jack and slide system was used to move the stacker reclaimer into place.
The Outcome:
We provided Westshore with a well-planned and well-executed delivery of their new coal stacker reclaimer to their port terminal at Roberts Banks. The project was completed safely and on schedule. Once assembled, the 1500-ton coal stacker reclaimer measured 30.5 metres in height and stretched 107 metres in length. This impressive equipment boasts a massive bearing system that was manufactured to within five one hundredths of an inch. The new coal stacker reclaimer was the centerpiece of Westshore Terminal’s multimillion dollar upgrade and we were grateful to have played a part in its placement.
