Introduction:
As part of BC Hydro’s decommissioning of the 70-year-old power station at the John Hart Dam in Campbell River, B.C, two 90-meter surge towers needed to be removed in addition to 650- meter-long penstocks.
The contract for decommissioning was granted to InPower B.C. but they required specialized assistance for the safe removal of the towers and penstocks.
The Challenge:
The steel-construction towers required careful demolition due to obvious safety concerns. As well, since one of the three towers was to remain standing, the other two needed to be felled without interfering with or compromising the foundational integrity of the third.
The demolition of the towers required explosives, while the dismantling of the penstocks, which led from the dam to the generating station, required the use of mechanical equipment. In addition, there was a wide variety of stakeholders involved in the decommissioning project, and all needed to be satisfied with the course of action.
The Solution:
InPower B.C. and the other contractors trusted Pacific Demolition with this specialized procedure. After careful planning, a 450-meter safety radius was created around the towers to block public or worker access.
Our crews attached explosives to the base girders and felled the two towers in a safe and efficient manner. Blasting operations generated minimal vibrations and the majority of materials from the penstocks and surge towers were recycled.
The Outcome:
InPower B.C. got exactly what they needed, in terms of the safe and thorough demolition of the penstocks and towers. All in all, we completed the job and earned another satisfied client.
