Introduction:
TransLink is currently upgrading their SkyTrain services, which includes replacing the escalators in many of the stations throughout Greater Vancouver.
As SkyTrain traffic continues to increase, the escalator upgrade is meant to improve accessibility, safety, and reliability for transit users well into the future.
The Challenge:
The replacement project was not easy. It was potentially disruptive to the public as well as dangerous for workers and transit users alike. At the particular SkyTrain station where ProTech was enlisted to help, transit services remained active throughout the entire process.
In addition, each of the four escalators that required replacement was in a different location, and each location posed its own engineering challenges to remove the existing escalator and replace it with the new. As well, the space available in the station was tight and didn’t allow for any margin of error. Also, the outside space around the station was well occupied with active businesses, which required more sensitivity and safety protocol.
The Solution:
TransLink trusted ProTech with the complicated procedure, and we rose to the challenge. Our engineers devised four unique engineering solutions for the removal and replacement of the escalators. The first was completed with a crane, the second with hydraulic gantries, the third with a custom dual monorail (attached to the roof of the station’s staircase), and the fourth with a temporary monorail (set up to span the escalator from the floor above).
This kind of creative thinking delivered four exceptional installations. In addition, we provided container receiving and destuffing, as well as storage and transportation to site to give TransLink a complete solution for the project.
The Outcome:
TransLink got exactly what they were hoping for. The project was completed safely and efficiently. There were no incidents and only minimal modifications to the existing station, and minimal disruption for transit users and nearby businesses. All in all, we completed the job and earned another satisfied client. As a result, SkyTrain users are able to enjoy new escalators that are safer, more reliable, and more accessible.
